The ability to distinguish compensatory feeding behaviors from truly competent breastfeeding is one of the most critical — and frequently underdeveloped — skills in the IBCLC's clinical toolkit. This online course is designed to help IBCLCs build the foundational assessment skills and clinical confidence needed to identify when a breastfeeding infant is compensating, determine the underlying structural or functional causes, and make timely, appropriate interventions and referrals. Participants will learn to recognize oral restrictions, understand their presentation and potential consequences and identify signs of structural impairment contributing to feeding dysfunction. Participants will explore the essential elements of a thorough functional feeding assessment and will develop strategies for communicating findings clearly and collaboratively, with both families and interdisciplinary practitioners, to optimize outcomes.
